The Army Sports Institute in Pune was established on 01 Jul 2001 as part of Army’s launching of Mission Olympics Programme. The idea was to train the vast reservoir of talent in the Army in select seven sports disciplines to include Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Diving, Fencing, Weightlifting and Wrestling with an ultimate aim of winning medals at Olympics.

The Army Sports Institute is located in heart of Pune with state of the art infrastructure comparable to any middle level International standard. The Institute draws its sportsmen from the Army as well as from young raw and proven talent from Boys Sports Company. These sportsmen are supported by a team of foreign and Indian specialists in sports medicine, sports Physiology, sports Psychology, Biomechanics, sports Statistician and sports Nutrition.

The Institute at its young age has made spectacular progress and given an inspired performance in International competition to include Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympics. The Institute enabled participation of two sportsmen in 2004 Athens Olympics, one sportsman in 2008 Beijing Olympics and eight sportsmen in 2012 London Olympics. One of the sportsmen Sub L Debendro Singh, Vishisht Seva Medal finished closest to a medal in 2012 London Olympics by securing fifth position in Boxing (49 Kg) and nine sportsmen in 2016 RIO Olympics. 12 sportsmen in 2020 Tokyo Olympic. One of the sportsmen Sub Neeraj Chopra, Vishisht Seva Medal won Gold medal in 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Athletics (Javelin)

Army Sports Institute to its credit has ­­­­1128 International medals and 5045 National medals with number of firsts and records in the sporting history of the country. The vision of Institute stands tall to produce world class athletes with an aim to win medals in Olympics and has partially achieved the aim by winning five Youth Olympic Medals in the three Youth Olympics conducted so far since 2010. Out of eight medals won by India in Youth Olympics 2010 Singapore, three medals were won by boys nurtured at Army Sports Institute, Pune i.e. Sports Cadets Durgesh Kumar Pal, 400 mtrs Hurdles (Silver); Sports Cadets Shiva Thapa, Boxing (Silver) and Sports Cadets Vikas Krishan, Boxing (Bronze). Sports Cadets Atul Verma, Recurve Archery won Bronze medal in Youth Olympic Games 2014 held in China and Sports Cated Jeremy Lalrinnunga won Gold Medal in Youth Olympic Games 2018 at Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Institute functions under the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (IS&T) and is headed by Colonel as Commandant. The team of this Institute is definitely headed the right way with its disciplined, focused, dedicated and committed approach towards developing and demonstrating an explosive performance.
