The exponential growth in the importance of Sports in India and its Armed Forces requires a matching capability in an availability of Sports Medicine Specialists. Currently there is a yawning gap and keeping this fact in mind, it is indeed a feather in the caps of Mission Olympic Wing, Directorate General of Military Training and the Armed Forces Medical Services, where in these two branches of army have come together for the recognition of MD (Doctor of Medicine) Sports Medicine course. The collaborative zeal has resulted in the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik permitting Army Sports Institute as the Training Centre for MD Sports Medicine residents who are selected by the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. This will be a big boost towards fulfilling the requirement of Sports Medicine specialists, given a rapidly expanding prospective plan of Sports Medicine Centres in the Armed Forces.
Previously, the only recognized course available for Sports Medicine was Diploma conducted at National Institute of Sports, Patiala. Only recently has the Medical Council of India (MCI) included this 3 years Post Graduate MD Degree in the list of PG subjects. ASI gains the reputation of being only the second institution in India where this course got underway.
